Peter Herrly
 

Peter F. Herrly, Colonel, U. S. Army (Retired) is a recognized expert in strategic leadership and organizational transformation. He was Chief of Doctrine on the U.S. Joint Staff, working directly with Generals Colin Powell and John Shalikashvili, from the end of the Cold War until his departure to France in 1995. In Paris, he was first Chief of the U.S. Army’s liaison network and then U.S. Defense Attaché, where he worked closely with the French armed forces to develop effective operational partnerships in a variety of areas.

Today, he is the President of Herrly Group, an international consulting and executive development firm, serves as Director for European Affairs for the Association of the United States Army, and as Chief of Historical Operations for the contract service which provides battlefield staff rides to the United States Army in Europe.

He sustains his research interests as professeur associé at the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politique and is a regular participant in historical and political seminars and conferences. He was principal author of Joint Warfare of the U.S. Armed Forces, which has been distributed to over 250,000 American and allied military leaders, and numerous articles on military and historical subjects.

His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was commissioned from the University of Notre Dame du Lac and holds an advanced degree from the University of Wisconsin in history. He taught military history, strategy, and organizational culture at the United States Military Academy at West Point and the National War College in Washington, D.C.

Michel Brugnon, Lieutenant General, French Air Force (Retired) is a leading expert on military strategy. He began his career as a fighter pilot in 1966, and went on to command numerous operations in every theater of war in which the French Air Force has been involved. Notably, he commanded the French forces in Chad (1991-92) and the aerial operations in the Balkans (1993-94).

He was successively appointed head of the French Joint Operation Center, head of “operations-logistics” on the French Air Force staff, then commander of the Strategic Air Command. As an expert in armament and procedures, he was put in charge of international relations both in bilateral situations as well as with European or international organizations such as the UN and NATO. These positions taught him the art of handling complex situations in difficult environments and allowed him to acquire extensive experience in commanding men and working with organizations and management.

He was made a Commander of the Légion d’Honneur and of the Ordre du Mérite and is also the recipient of the Médaille de l’Aéronautique. He is often invited to lecture on operational and strategic matters in France as well as abroad. He connects the study of history with the challenges of our modern world and emphasizes the consistency of human behaviors.
